Healing Powers of HaloTherapy

Healing Powers of HaloTherapy
And How Everyone Can Benefit from it

Dr. Simran Sethi

Halotherapy (the therapeutic process experienced in a salt room), also known as salt therapy, is one of the most ‘tried and true’ holistic and natural healing methods. It date back to the ancient Greeks, and in the 1800s, Halotherapy’s healing benefits were rediscovered by Polish salt miners who noticed how exposure to salt in salt mines (about 450 feet deep in the ground) reduced symptoms and ailments such as:

  • Overall respiratory/lung function
  • Allergies
  • Cough/cold

There have been numerous advancements in healthcare and technology since then, but the healthcare practitioners of all kinds are taking notice that sitting in a salt room or salt chamber has aided not only respiratory health, but also skin conditions such as:

  • Eczema
  • Psoriasis
  • Acne
  • Dermatitis
  • Dry and Flaky Skin
  • Rosacea

All of these benefits come from just spending a therapeutic 45 minutes in a salt room.

RenewMD is the only medical spa in the Bay Area that includes a Halotherapy room. Clients have come it to heal long-standing respiratory issues, and/or clear their systems during periods of very poor air quality. Some of the facial and skin care clients enjoy Halotherapy for the detoxing benefits for their skin. Some enjoy the salt room purely because of the relaxing and meditative atmosphere.

My clients have not only come to RenewMD to address their own skin and body concerns, but they also discuss skin health of their children, respectively. Eczema and/or dermatitis are common skin rashes little kids face, as young as one year-old (the youngest age we recommend for our Halotherapy room).

I have recommended to expectant mothers to try dry Salt Therapy as an option if they prefer not to rely on over-the-counter asthma and allergy medication. Ionized salt particles also help boost the immune system.

What to Expect in the Salt Room

The RenewMD salt room simulates the environment of a salt cave. The (Himalayan pharmaceutical-grade) salt we use neutralizes positive ions we would naturally pick up from electronic devices and counterbalances with negative ions resulting in a healing experience, stabilizing mood and decreasing stress, and beginning various healing processes.

How Often Should I Use a Salt Room?

Halotherapy offers the best results when practiced regularly. The benefits are best consistency and frequent. People with chronic issues will benefit greatly if visiting salt rooms at least 3-4 times a week. Those who are looking to incorporate Halotherapy into their regular wellness routine would benefit from a weekly session. Halotherapy is safe to use on a daily basis if desired.

What are the Side Effects?

There are no negative side effects to Halotherapy. Salt is 100% natural and drug free. Some may experience a runny nose, slight cough as a result of the salt doing its work to remove mucus and toxins from the lungs and airways. Some clients have also experienced a slight taste of salt in their mouths, another indication that the Halotherapy is taking effect.

When to Avoid Halotherapy?

Only in circumstances of contagious illnesses like the flu or pneumonia, should people avoid salt rooms as to not affect other visitors.
